Evaluation of AgNOR count in cytological smears of chronic bidi and hookah smokers

چکیده
Oral Squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for over 90% of oral cancer cases and a small percentage of these cases are thought to develop from potentially malignant disorders. Main etiological factor associated with OSCC is smoking. It’s a well known fact that in chronic smokers nuclear alterations are evident. There is a correlation between nucleolar function, size and cell doubling time in human cancer cell lines, which has shown the importance of nucleus in tumor pathology. The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are ribosomic DNA loops which can be clearly visualized at the light microscopic level by using a silver reaction which stains the acidic, non histonic proteins present in the nucleus. AgNOR is useful in estimating nuclear proliferative activity and it acts as a marker of pre-malignant and malignant change. The aim of this study is to compare the proliferative activity by AgNOR count in cytosmears of chronic bidi and hookah smokers in a section of Haryana population.

Background: Oral mucosa of cigarette and hookah users is more susceptible for malignant changes, so the purpose of this study is to assess the impact of cigarette and hookah on morphometry features of oral mucosa. Methods: In this Historical Cohort study, Cytological smears prepared from three regions of oral mucosa (Buccal mucosa, lateral border of tongue and floor of the mouth) in 4...
متن کاملBidi and Hookah Use Among Canadian Youth: Findings From the 2010 Canadian Youth Smoking Survey
INTRODUCTION Although cigarette use among Canadian youth has decreased significantly in recent years, alternative forms of tobacco use are becoming increasingly popular. Surveillance of youth tobacco use can help inform prevention programs by monitoring trends in risk behaviors. We examined the prevalence of bidi and hookah use and factors associated with their use among Canadian youth by using...

Background and Aim: A strong causal relationship exists between cigarette smoking and development of oral squamous cell carcinoma, so oral screening using exfoliative cytology has been recommended to facilitate the early diagnosis of cellular alterations in oral mucosa and silver staining (AgNOR technique) has been proven to be of value in the detection of incipient cellular alterations. The pu...
متن کاملAssessment of cytological atypia, AgNOR and nuclear area in epithelial cells of normal oral mucosa exposed to toombak and smoking
The purpose of this study was to assess cellular proliferative activity of clinically healthy oral mucosal epithelial cells of toombak dippers and smokers by means of AgNOR counts and nuclear areas via nuclear morphometry. Smears were collected from normal-appearing mouth floor mucosa and tongue of 75 toombak dippers, 75 smokers and 50 non-tobacco users between the ages of 20 and 70 with a mean...
متن کاملNucleolar organizer regions distribution in fine needle aspiration cytological smears from breast lesions.
Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is now an integral part of the pre-operative investigation of breast lesions and the therapeutic protocol is today often planned on the basis of cytodiagnosis. However, from time to time the cytological picture may be equivocal or inconclusive. In recent years, nucleolar organizer region (NOR) scores have been explored for potential value in the diagnosis o...
